Winter Hair

Oh, the dreaded winter. The cold air and the indoor heat are big factors that affect hair health. Here are some tips to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy this wintery season.

Everything starts in the shower. Wash your hair with warm, not hot water. I knooww it feels nice, but hot hot water is a no no for healthy hair. A nice "cool shot" after rinsing out your conditioner is an added bonus to add shine. Why? Cool water (and air) help smooth the cuticle of the hair. The smoother the cuticle, the more light can reflect off of the hair. :)

Using sulfate free shampoos and conditioners are key. Sulfates strip the hair from its natural oils, and over time dry out the hair. It's basically detergent. Making sure always to JUST shampoo the roots and condition the midstrands to ends of the hair. Over washing also causes dry & itchy scalps, so keep the shampooing under 2x a week if you can.

Conditioning: In winter months I find my hair needs more moisture. The city heating doesn't help keeping our hair and skin moisturized. That's why I always recommend using a hair mask instead of conditoner. Especially for curlier and drier textures, moisture is KEY!

After the shower, a leave in conditioner is optimal for sealing in that moisture. Making sure to really towel dry your hair (preferably with a microfibre towel) before applying any products. Some leave in conditioners are cream based and others come in spray form. Creams for thicker, drier textures and sprays are great for normal to fine hair types.

Since we're most likely blow drying our hair in the winter, HEAT PROTECTION is your best friend. Sometimes leave in conditioners have heat protection in them, great double whammy. If not, there are volumizing sprays and serums that work great as well.

Hope this little winter pep talk keeps your hair looking fab all season long! Stay warm!
